17 August 2009Fifa is to give away over 120 000 category four World Cup tickets to 20 000 stadium construction workers and thousands of youngsters involved in community programmes aligned with the Ticket Fund initiative – a first in the 80-year history of the tournament.Speaking at the launch of the World Cup Ticket Fund in Johannesburg last week, Local Organising Committee CEO Danny Jordaan said 40 000 of these tickets would be given to 20 000 construction workers, each worker receiving two tickets for a group stage match at the stadium they had helped to build.The remaining 80 000 tickets will be issued as a reward to thousands of South Africans, particularly youngsters, who are involved in programmes aimed at encouraging participation in football and community-oriented initiatives.These programmes range from making children and young adults aware of health issues, to equipping people with financial literacy skills to manage their lives better, to raising awareness of the need to protect the environment to score “green goals”.The 80 000 tickets will be distributed via the six Fifa partners involved with these programmes: Adidas, Hyundai/Kia, Sony, Coca-Cola, Emirates and Visa. Encouraging learning – Adidas, in partnership with the Department of Education and the 2010 Organising Committee, will award 15 000 tickets to encourage children participating in educational and soccer activities that form part of the official schools campaign, My 2010 School Adventure. Protecting the environment – Building on a partnership with the South African Department of Education established at the Fifa Confederations Cup, Coca-Cola aims to create a generation of environmentally aware children when they roll out a recycling programme to grade 8 to 12 students in schools across South Africa. 20 000 tickets have been assigned to this project. Healthy lifestyles – Kia Motors will partner with South African development organisation Sporting Chance to run street soccer leagues and health education programmes in some of South Africa’s poorest communities. 5 000 tickets have been assigned to this project.Combating HIV/Aids – Sony has teamed up with Grassroots Soccer, a South African non-profit organisation that uses football to promote HIV/Aids awareness among children and young adults across South Africa. 15 000 tickets have been assigned to this project.Financial literacy – Through Visa’s financial literacy roadshows, low-income workers in the industrial and tourism sectors will get the opportunity to learn basic financial skills. 5 000 tickets have been assigned to this project.Emirates and Hyundai have also confirmed their commitment to the Ticket Fund, with plans to award 15 000 and 5 000 tickets respectively.The Ticket Fund initiative will therefore not end when the final whistle is blown on 11 July 2010, but “will mark only the beginning of long-term partnerships that will continue to create opportunities for South Africans for years to come,” Fifa said in a statement.The Fund “aims to use the excitement and passion for the game in the country as a tool to motivate and engage people, particularly young South Africans, on topics such as education, health and the environment.”Jordaan said that despite the “massive global demand for tickets to the tournament, we are doing all we can to ensure South African residents are well represented in the stadiums with their unique vibrancy and spirit.”The Ticket Fund was also a way of showing appreciation “for the critical role played by the thousands of construction workers whose skill and dedication has made this project a vivid reality.”Source: BuaNews

Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The first positive case of West Nile Virus (WNV) in an Ohio horse has been confirmed in 2016.Testing on samples taken from a seven-year-old Standardbred in Tuscarawas County confirmed the positive WNV diagnosis to the Ohio Department of Agriculture Sept. 12. The horse’s veterinarian first examined the animal Aug. 29. The animal was euthanized after exhibiting significant clinical signs, including shaking, agitation and thrashing. The horse had not been vaccinated.West Nile Virus is transmitted to horses via bites from infected mosquitoes. Clinical signs for WNV include flulike symptoms, where the horse seems mildly anorexic and depressed. Changes in mentality, drowsiness, driving or pushing forward (often without control) and asymmetrical weakness may be observed. Mortality rate from WNV can be as high as 30% to 40% in horses. Infection with WNV does not always lead to signs of illness in people or animals. WNV is endemic in the United States and Ohio has reported three positive cases in horses each of the last few years.“This incident in Tuscarawas County should serve as an alert to all horse owners to vaccinate their animals against West Nile Virus,” said State Veterinarian Dr. Tony Forshey. “Vaccines are a proven and effective prevention tool and I encourage all owners to talk to their local vet for options and advice on how to keep their animals healthy.”In addition to vaccinations, horse owners also should work to reduce the mosquito population and eliminate possible breeding areas. Recommendations include: removing stagnant water sources; keeping animals inside during the bugs’ feeding times, which are typically early in the morning and evening; and using mosquito repellents.
Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest With milk check butterfat values currently in the $2.50 to $2.70 per pound range and nearly a dollar more than protein, butterfat is where it’s at in terms of dairy producer income today.A high oleic soybean variety that was tested recently at Penn State University for its dairy nutrition applications showed a surprisingly significant impact on raising the milkfat percentage. There was no impact on milk volume or other components and only a slight increase in dry matter intake, which resulted in no effect on feed efficiency in terms of energy-corrected milk.With butterfat doubling in value to average $2.30 per pound over the past three years, a 0.2% increase in butterfat for an 80-pound dairy herd could mean 35 cents per hundredweight to the milk check under normal marketing conditions when milk volume and other components are unchanged.Through a check-off grant from the Pennsylvania Soybean Board, Alexander Hristov, Ph.D., PAS, Penn State professor of dairy nutrition, led a project to evaluate dairy ration performance of three soybean meal sources: conventional, high linoleic extruded soybean meal; extruded Plenish (DuPont Pioneer) high oleic soybean meal; and whole, heated Plenish high oleic soybeans. High oleic soybeans have been grown commercially in the United States for five seasons, and are grown in Pennsylvania and 11 other states.The study was done with extruded soybean meal versus conventional solvent extraction because more of the soybean oil is retained with the extrusion process. Substituting the extruded Plenish variety soybean meal for conventional extruded soybean meal requires no adjustment in dairy rations, according to the study.“We were surprised with such an obvious (0.2%) milkfat percentage increase. The mechanism we think is taking place is the higher level of oleic fatty acids in the Plenish high oleic soybeans versus linoleic fatty acids in the conventional soybeans, and a reduction in the already small level of trans fatty acids in milk,” Hristov said.Not only did the high oleic variety raise milk butterfat content over conventional soybean meal, it changed the composition of the milkfat. The increase in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and some significant decreases in trans fatty acids in the milk are noteworthy for consumers.“The 17% reduction in trans fatty acids is significant,” Hristov said. “These are the harmful fatty acids consumers want to avoid and it went from 3.36% of the total percentage of milkfat to 2.80% in the Plenish diets. Even though those levels of trans fatty acids are relatively low in milk to begin with, the Plenish diets still decreased them further, which is beneficial.“If soybean growers grow more high oleic beans versus conventional because it benefits human food products more, there will be more soymeal going into animal feed with this profile. But the benefits are only realized if the residual fat is in the soymeal (via extrusion or whole roasting). Although this wasn’t studied, it can be assumed that the benefit is close to zero if solvent extraction processes are used versus extrusion.”Hristov describes the research and findings in his paper published in the September 2015 Journal of Dairy Science. Prime Minister the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller says Jamaica is currently “undertaking efforts towards ratification of the Arms Trade Treaty”.The landmark Treaty which regulates the international trade in conventional arms, from small arms to battle tanks, combat aircraft and warships, was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on April 2, 2013. According to the UN, the treaty will foster peace and security by putting a stop to destabilizing arms flows to conflict regions; prevent human rights abusers and violators of the law of war from being supplied with arms; and will help keep warlords, pirates, and gangs from acquiring these deadly tools.In her address to the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, earlier Saturday, September 28, Mrs. Simpson Miller welcomed the treaty while hitting out against transnational organized crime.“Transnational organised criminal enterprises wreak havoc on economies and challenge the capacities of states to deal with these threats. No country is immune to the direct or indirect effects of the scourge of transnational crime,” she said.The Prime Minister contended that increased collaboration is necessary in confronting such threats to human development.“To this end, we welcome the recent opening for signature of the landmark Arms Trade Treaty in June of this year which represents one of the many steps that the international community must take towards defeating terrorism, crime and violence,” she said.Mrs. Simpson Miller further pointed out that bilateral and regional cooperation through information sharing, capacity building and assistance are integral in dealing with crime and violence and security issues.The Prime Minister expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the recent Kenya mall attack; and concern for the suffering of the people of Syria. She joined the international community in condemning the use of chemical weapons.“We welcome the recent positive steps taken by the United Nations Security Council,” Mrs. Simpson Miller said, and emphatically stated Jamaica’s firm commitment to “a just, lasting and peaceful solution to the situation in the Middle East.”In the meantime, the Prime Minister also reiterated a call for an end to the embargo against Cuba and “extra-territorial measures which target third world countries.”She noted that the trade and economic embargo against Cuba has caused untold hardships to its people and has no place in the 21st century.
