Mars has no liquid water today, but water must have covered much of the planet in the past. How? Nobody knows.Look at the diagram of Mars the way some secular planetary scientists believe it looked in ancient times (Phys.org). It’s almost covered with water. How could that be? There’s no liquid water there today, and Mars lacks the atmosphere that could keep it liquid. It’s also too cold for liquid water most of the time, although some may be locked up as ice in the polar caps.Scientists infer its presence by its effects. The surface of Mars today is covered with what look like drainage channels. A leading hypothesis is that liquid water carved them at some time in the unobservable past, perhaps about 3 billion years ago.A new study led by Northern Illinois University geography professor Wei Luo calculates the amount of water needed to carve the ancient network of valleys on Mars and concludes the Red Planet’s surface was once much more watery than previously thought.Dr. Luo and his two colleagues re-estimated the amount of water needed. The new estimate is an order of magnitude higher than previous estimates, and 4,000 times the volume of all the valley cavities. He envisions an earth-like Mars with a water cycle, rainfall, rivers, streams, and a large ocean covering over half the planet.Our most conservative estimates of the global volume of the Martian valley networks and the cumulative amount of water needed to carve those valleys are at least 10 times greater than most previous estimates.There are some problems, though. Nobody knows how the water got there, or how it could last if it did.But a large piece of the puzzle is missing, he added, because climate models have not been able to reproduce an early Mars climate sufficiently warm enough to promote an active hydrologic cycle.“Mars is much farther way from the sun than Earth, and when the sun was younger, it was not as bright as it is today,” Luo said. “So there’s still a lot to work out in trying to reconcile the evidence for more water.“Dr Luo needs a large ocean in his model to account for a water cycle that could drive rainfall and erosion to create the valley networks (VNs). Undoubtedly an ocean on a planet with 38% earth’s gravity would not just sit still like a placid sea. Even without a large moon, diurnal rotation and atmospheric winds would likely set up tides and currents. Some of the geological features are considered to be tsunami deposits. Could a sufficiently large impact or volcano move water over continents?Mars elevation map, 2002 MOLAThe paper in Nature Communications sets out some of the possibilities for a Martian ocean in motion: fluctuating shorelines, tsunami deposits, sedimentary layers and deltas. Luo does not speak of any floods. It’s amusing, however, to see planetary scientists routinely refer to a “Noachian epoch” on Mars.How solid is the evidence for a large ocean on Mars? “There is no ground truth to assess the real accuracy of our estimation,” he says. In planetary science, that’s OK these days. If your model requires it, that’s enough reason to believe in it, even if you can’t imagine how water could exist on Mars at all. Someone’s rule of speculating is that if you’re going to tell a whopper, you might as well tell a really big one:Our result is consistent with a warm and wet early Mars climate and the existence of an ancient northern ocean. If erosion of the VNs required significant chemical or physical weathering to produce transportable sediment, fluvial abrasion of channel beds or transport of appreciable quantities of gravel, the required volume of water may have been many times our conservative estimate.Luo justifies his whopper on the basis that something had to carve these channels. If not a wet, warm, oceanic Mars, what did?But on Earth, where the surface is 70% covered by water, could there have been a global flood? Oh, come now; that’s just a religious myth.We’re not disparaging scientific models. Creation geologists use models to try to retrofit observations to Noah’s flood. Dr Walt Brown, for instance, traced ancient shorelines north and west of Grand Canyon to model a large inland lake that could have carved the canyon by a dam breach. Models are useful tools, but they are only simulations of reality. The test of a model is how well it conforms to observable reality. If your assumptions do not hang together well (for instance, a faint young sun with a warm, wet Mars), you had better remain humble about your assumptions, and be open to alternatives. And if you are going to go out on a limb like Dr Luo does, don’t disparage the work of those whose models have much better correspondence with observable reality. Creation geologists can count ten or more clear evidences from the Grand Canyon alone that not only support a global flood, but rule out any other explanation. That’s ground truth. There were 6.4 days available for fieldwork for the week ending September 25th . The hot and dry weather promoted the drying of the corn crop. Condition rating for crops and pastures remained steady. Tension spread in Pilakhuwa town, Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh, on Monday morning after a man allegedly died of torture in police lock-up. Three policemen, including the Station House Officer, have been suspended and a magisterial inquiry has been ordered by the District Magistrate.According to local sources, Pradeep Tomar (30), a resident of Lakhan village, was picked up by police near the Chhajrasi toll plaza on Sunday for questioning in connection with a murder case. They alleged that he was detained when he was travelling with his wife and son. Late in the night, when his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to the G.S. Medical College in Pilakhuwa and then the Meerut Medical College, where he died in the early hours of Monday. A video purportedly showing Tomar’s posterior as completely blue and marks of beating on his arms has gone viral.‘Died during treatment’Yesh Veer Singh, Superintendent of Police, Hapur, told The Hindu, “On August 30, a half-burnt body of a woman was found in the jungle of Lakhan village. She was the wife of Tomar’s brother-in-law. During surveillance and investigation, he was found to be a suspect. He developed health complications during questioning and was taken to a local hospital. Later, he was referred to the Meerut Medical College, where he died during treatment.”As the policemen didn’t follow the standard operating procedure and didn’t inform their seniors before taking Tomar into custody, Mr. Singh added, inspector Yogesh Baliyan, chowki in-charge Ajab Singh and constable Manoj have been suspended. “We are waiting for the post-mortem report before taking further action. A departmental inquiry and a magisterial inquiry have been ordered.” He refused to comment on the viral video and the claim of Tomar’s son and wife that he was beaten in their presence. Family members and farmer leaders protested in the Meerut Collectorate, demanding murder charges against policemen involved in the case. The Provincial Armed Constabulary has been deployed in Pilakhuwa and nearby villages.
Mounting a blistering attack on the Congress-JMM-RJD alliance in Jharkhand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday alleged that its “self-seeking” past governments were driven by the “lust for power”, and exploited the mineral-rich State’s resources while neglecting the people. He also accused the previous Congress governments at the Centre of procrastinating resolution of the Kashmir issue and the Ayodhya dispute. “This election is a contest between those who serve and those who loot. Yet, this two-hour-three-minutes film which talks about achieving your goals under insurmountable difficulties has moments which will pull at your heart strings.advertisementMary’s struggle to reach the top of her game in the face of parental opposition and against all odds is an extraordinary story, which begged to be told on celluloid. Her persevering attitude and the will to fight under any circumstances, even after she got married and was a mother of two twins is a tale of courage and determination. Sprinkle this with a slight personal conflict with her newly married husband Onler (Darshan Kumar). Add to it her struggle to achieve a balance in her personal and professional life even in the wake of her boxing coach (Sunil Thapa) who almost stopped talking to her, the film had everything that a gripping film script should have.Koel Purie’s review | Rohit Khilnani’s review | Suhani Singh’s review | Saurabh Dwivedi’s review Unfortunately, it is all marred by a script which took the convenient route, embellished it with cliches and preferred to tell it in simplistic manner. The film just does not have the gravitas of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. For the most part, it is trying to hard to be a motivational story of one of country’s most inspiring sportsman. Agreed that encapsulating the life of Mary Kom is not as easy task but the first half of the story is told in such a random way, that you fail to get moved by it. It is only in the second half when Mary has to make the decision of returning to the ring that the film gains intense momentum. Till then it feels like a story which was being told all over the place.Things move on too hurriedly in the first half. You do not really get absorbed in the early parts of her life. It remains a bit sketchy and there are too many melodramatic moments like where Mary’s father throws away her boxing gloves into burning coal. Then there are outright stupid moments where Priyanka is shown thanking her husband for rubbing Iodex on her shoulders. Most of us burst out laughing at this silly in-brand advertising gimmick. At another instance Mary is having Havmor ice-cream and eating gol gappas, calling it health food.Then there is the evil Boxing Federation which is only there to create obstacles in the path of Mary Kom. The boxing matches themselves are not able to build the tension that you are supposed to feel when an important match is being fought. Case in point being Chak De! India or the recent Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.Yet what binds this doddering film together is Priyanka’s sincere performance and the effort she puts into it. Of course she does not get the body language or the accent right all the time. Like for instance, when she signs an autograph in a local bus, she appears more like her character in Fashion signing the autograph than Mary Kom. Still, Priyanka completely sinks her teeth into this role and makes it watchable for the most part. Not much can be said about the other supporting actors. However, actor Darhan Kumar lends able support in this biopic.advertisementIn a better filmmaker’s hand Mary Kom would have been a better film. Right now it remains a Priyanka Chopra film.
