Dave Call, Gregg’s general manager, said the company has invested about $1 million in changes to the facility to address nuisance odors and to comply with AQMD orders. “I have put forth a good-faith effort and I felt our efforts will be rewarded,” Call said. “I’m encouraged by the board’s decision. We will continue working on projects to improve the number of environmentally friendly materials here at Gregg.” Last April the AQMD issued an order of abatement, the hearing board in November issued 16 requirements that the foundry, located at 10460 Hickson St. near Rio Vista Elementary School, needed to comply with in cleaning up its operations. The requirements included switching to less odorous sand for the company’s molding operations and ceasing casting operations between 3 and 9p.m. Gregg is scheduled to meet with the AQMD hearing board again in July for a progress report. EL MONTE – The South Coast Air Quality Management District has decided to allow an iron foundry to stay in business. The AQMD began monitoring El Monte-based Gregg Industries last February after residents accused it of emitting foul odors into the air. After months of public hearings, the AQMD’s hearing board issued an amended order Tuesday that said odor levels have decreased, residential complaints dropped significantly, from 46 in January to 12 in February, and that the company passed an odor performance demonstration. AQMD officials added they do not expect the order to result in the closure of Gregg Industries.
