By Gary Truitt – Apr 28, 2014 Facebook Twitter Corn Planting 8% Complete in Indiana SHARE Corn planting is under way but still well below average for this time of year. Soybean planting has been reported in very limited amounts, primarily in southern districts. While progress seems to be slow relative to 5 year averages, it’s important to note that those averages include the unusually fast years of 2012 and 2010. Some small portion of frost damage has been witnessed in winter wheat as it greens up, and slow-growing pasture has led some farmers to maintain their livestock on hay for the time being. Those not planting focused on tillage and application of fertilizers, herbicides and insecticides, as well as maintenance of equipment and tile. Facebook Twitter Home Indiana Agriculture News Corn Planting 8% Complete in Indiana Continuing warm and dry weather for the week ending April 27 has encouraged farmers to begin planting activities, according to the USDA, NASS, Great Lakes Region. Temperatures in the state ranged from 2º below to 8º degrees above normal, with a high of 83º and a low of 28º. Precipitation amounts ranged from 0.08 to 1.13 inches. Many farmers took advantage of warmer and drier conditions this week to kick off planting, although some others held back in anticipation of cool wet weather predicted for much of next week. The student body president at the University of Florida is facing an impeachment threat of his own, for allegedly spending $50,000 in student fees to have Trump’s eldest son, Donald Jr., and his girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle, speak on campus.Members of the university’s student senate filed a resolution this week to impeach Student Body President Michael Murphy for malfeasance and abuse of power. The resolution accuses Murphy of spending mandatory student fees to support his own political beliefs by having Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle visit last month. The pair spoke on October 10 at the University Auditorium to an audience of more than 800 people for a $50,000 joint payment.Student Body statutes forbid leaders from spending student money in support of or against a political party, according to the resolution. However, Murphy claims the visit was not campaign related. UF’s student newspaper, The Independent Florida Alligator, obtained emails that reveal a Trump re-election campaign official asked Murphy to bring the pair to the school.“We met at my house on the 4th of July,” Caroline Wren, a national finance consultant of Trump Victory, wrote to Murphy in a September 10 email. She adds, “I wanted to follow up with you regarding a speaking engagement at the University of Florida for Donald Trump Jr.”The newspaper also reports that Murphy contacted the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders and invited him to come to campus. Sanders’ campaign declined, citing scheduling issues.

Police have arrested a man for allegedly attacking a mail carrier in northwest Miami-Dade County on Christmas Eve.Miami-Dade Police detectives say the victim was in her postal truck preparing for her next stop just before noon on Tuesday. At that point, 45-year-old Sosthene Louis jumped through the open driver’s door. The incident was captured on a nearby surveillance camera.A witness says Louis had been sitting down in the middle of a nearby intersection before the attack. The judge asked Louis in bond court on Wednesday, “You don’t think that’s unlawful touching?”A public defender replied, “Now, remember that it must with the intent to commit an unlawful touching. I don’t know if that’s his intent,” which led the judge responding, “I think I can infer it certainly from the facts of lying his body across the victim against her will.”The surveillance video shows the postal worker leaving the vehicle to deliver mail. A few moments later, she is seen returning to the truck. After Louis jumps through the door, the victim is seen pushing him off of her using her right arm. She also appears to say something as she repeatedly motions with her hand. The video shows the postal worker closing the vehicle’s door. Louis then jumps on the hood and yanks a windshield wiper, before going into a store. He was arrested when he returned to the area later in the day.Louis’ attorney says his client was not trying to attack the mail carrier.According to the judge, “He laid on top of her in a mail truck — certainly against her will — OK, so I am finding probable cause. The issue with him is that he’s a walk-away from a program. He clearly suffers from mental health issues, so it needs to be flagged or alerted to your felony counterpart to see if this is something that — I really don’t know on this charge what the state attorney’s position is going to be. I don’t know.”The U.S. Postal Inspector released a statement about the incident, which reads in part, “The safety of our employees has always been our main priority and we are very appreciative of MDPD’s quick response and apprehension of this individual. Once we were made aware of this incident our Postal Police officers responded and assisted MDPD with their investigation. We will be following this matter closely to determine what actions need to be taken to ensure that this does not occur again.”Louis is charged with burglary with assault or battery and criminal mischief.A judge ordered him to stay away from the victim and denied bond.

President Trump has enjoyed beautiful weather while at the winter white house and has been able to play a round of golf nearly every day at one of his clubs. He is playing again today. A patient in Southern California has become the third person in the U.S. to be diagnosed with the new pneumonia-like virus from China, according to health officials. The Centers for Disease Control confirmed a traveler from the Chinese city of Wuhan, which is where the outbreak began, tested positive for the virus. That patient is in isolation at a hospital and is in good condition, a release from the agency states. The virus can cause fever, coughing, wheezing and pneumonia. It is a member of the coronavirus family, which is in turn related to the deadly SARS and MERS viruses that caused outbreaks in previous years. The first known case in California follows the first domestic diagnosis in Washington state on January 21 and another in Chicago last Friday. Both of those patients — in Washington, a man in his 30s, and in Chicago, a woman in her 60s — had traveled to China. The death toll from the virus in China has reached 56 so far. That country has issued massive travel bans in hard-hit sections of its borders while it tries to stop the virus from spreading. Meanwhile, the U.S. Consulate in Wuhan announced on Sunday that it would evacuate its personnel as well as some private citizens aboard a charter flight. The CDC expects more Americans to be diagnosed with the virus, which is believed to have an incubation period of about two weeks. The worldwide number of confirmed cases is approaching 2,000.In addition, the CDC is screening passengers on direct and connecting flights from Wuhan at major airports in Atlanta, Chicago, New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Former President Barack Obama has officially endorsed Joe Biden’s bid to become the next president of the US.The two-term president relayed his approval for Biden in a video message Tuesday originally posted on Twitter.“Choosing Joe to be my vice president was one of the best decisions I ever made, and he became a close friend. And I believe Joe has all the qualities we need in a president right now,” Obama said in part, in the video message.Obama also spoke briefly about the coronavirus and how he believes Biden is someone who will be able to bring the country together during these times and would put the country above his own agenda:“Joe has the character and the experience to guide us through one of our darkest times and heal us through a long recovery,” Obama said.“And I know he’ll surround himself with good people – experts, scientists, military officials who actually know how to run the government and care about doing a good job running the government, and know how to work with our allies, and who will always put the American people’s interests above their own.”Despite his endorsement of Biden over Bernie Sanders, Obama let it be known that he has no qualms with him:“Bernie’s an American original – a man who has devoted his life to giving voice to working people’s hopes, dreams, and frustrations,” Obama said. “He and I haven’t always agreed on everything, but we’ve always shared a conviction that we have to make America a fairer, more just, more equitable society.”Obama then went on to say that both Biden and Sanders understand that the world has changed and what needs to be done to ensure our future.“If I were running today, I wouldn’t run the same race or have the same platform as I did in 2008. The world is different; there’s too much unfinished business for us to just look backwards. We have to look to the future,” Obama said.“Bernie understands that. And Joe understands that. It’s one of the reasons that Joe already has what is the most progressive platform of any major party nominee in history,” Obama said. “Because even before the pandemic turned the world upside down, it was already clear that we needed real structural change.”
