Kindle Fire developer FAQ reveals lack of inapp purchases at launch

first_imgWith all the news surrounding the Kindle Fire, along with the rush to pre-order 2,000 of them every hour, it’s easy to forget Amazon has also created another device for developers to sell Android apps on.With that in mind, guidance has been posted on the Amazon developer website as to how exactly Kindle Fire apps are going to work, what sensors developers have access to, and what is happening with existing apps already offered through Amazon Appstore for Android.First the easy bit: existing, published apps on the Amazon Appstore for Android. Amazon is undertaking a review of every single app already in the system and testing it for Kindle Fire compatibility. If a problem is found with an app, Amazon will tell you and give you instructions on how to fix it.As for new apps, there’s a number of rules and compatibility options to adhere to. An app needs to be developed for Android 2.3.4 and “optimized for non-Google Mobile Services.” You also can’t include functionality that requires a gyroscope, microphone, camera, Bluetooth, GPS, WAN module, or access to a microSD card. On the flip side, you can use the accelerometer, light sensor, landscape and portrait mode switching, USB accessories, Wi-Fi connectivity, and multitouch input. We all know about the Kindle Fire display, but developers need to ensure their apps conform. The resolution of the 7-inch screen is 1024 x 600, but a 20 x 600 pixel area is reserved for the soft key menu, meaning an available resolution of 1004 x 600 in full screen mode. Finally, the bad news. Kindle Fire apps will not support in-app purchases for the moment. Kindle Fire runs a version of Android not compatible with Google Mobile Services, so the Google in-app system doesn’t work. Amazon has its own solution, using its own payment platform, but until they say otherwise, Amazon is keeping it in a beta status with developers getting access on an invite-only basis. You can of course apply to be invited, but it doesn’t look likely it will be available for launch day as Amazon is also suggesting if you want you app in the store on November 15, it needs to be finished now.Read more at the Amazon Appstore Developer Portallast_img read more
